Philosophy of History: The 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy

This term, students in 3-9 international class have been thinking about history. They have considered three questions in particular: What is history? What does it mean to call something a historical fact? and Can we know history just by learning the facts?

As a way to extend and develop their thinking, we examined the case of the Kennedy assassination. The students listened to a brief explanation of the events of November 22, watched the Zapruder film footage, and were handed two pieces of information - a photo of Harvey Lee Oswald, and a map of Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas. Their task, in three lessons, was to find evidence, think about how it fits together, and present an answer to the question: Did Lee Harvey Oswald act alone in assassinating John F. Kennedy?

Through the process of interpreting and presenting evidence, students experienced how history is made, and were able to reflect on the link between a historian’s purpose, their evidence, and the story they seek to tell.

今学期、高校3年生インターナショナルクラスの生徒たちは、歴史について考えています。

歴史とは何か？
何かを歴史的事実と呼ぶのはどういう意味か？
事実を学ぶだけで歴史を知ることができるのか？

その考えを発展させる方法として、ケネディ暗殺事件を取り上げました。
生徒たちは、11月22日の出来事について簡単な説明を聞き、ザプルーダー・フィルムと呼ばれる暗殺の瞬間の映像を見た後、ハーヴェイ・リー・オズワルドの写真と、テキサス州ダラスのディーレイ・プラザの地図という2つの情報を手渡されました。
彼らの課題は、証拠を見つけ、それがどのように組み合わされるかを考え、質問に対する答えを提示することでした。
リー・ハーヴェイ・オズワルドはジョン・F・ケネディを暗殺するために単独で行動したのか？

証拠の解釈と提示の過程を通じて、生徒たちは、歴史がどのように作られるかを体験し、歴史家の目的、証拠、そして彼らが語ろうとする物語との関連について考えることができました。
